Antoine Roegiers is a Belgian artist born in 1980 in
Braine-l’Alleud, who lives and works in Paris. He graduated with honors from the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris in 2007, the same year he was awarded the Prix Roger Bataille.
His work is deeply rooted in a dialogue with art history, particularly the Flemish and Northern European traditions. He draws inspiration from masters such as Pieter Bruegel, Hieronymus Bosch, and Peter Paul Rubens, as well as 19th-century Belgian artists like James Ensor, Félicien Rops, and Léon Spilliaert. These influences serve not as mere references but as a basis for reinterpretation, allowing him to bring the legacy of the Old Masters into a contemporary context.
Roegiers works across a wide range of media, including oil painting on wood and canvas, pen and acrylic drawing, and video animation. After beginning his career with painting and drawing, he expanded into moving image, exploring animation as a way to enhance narrative and emotional depth. His work is characterized by meticulous detail, rich imagery, and complex storytelling, often blending humor, surreal tension, and poetic imagination.
Since 2018, he has developed an ambitious long-term narrative project: a series of interconnected paintings that unfold a single story over several years, often extended into animated films derived from these works. These fragmented narratives invite viewers to actively construct meaning from layered and shifting scenes.
Throughout his career, Roegiers has received several distinctions, including the Yishu 8 artist-in-residence award in Beijing in 2012. He is represented by multiple international galleries and has exhibited widely in major institutions such as the Albertina in Vienna, Bozar in Brussels, the Harvard Art Museums, and the San Telmo Museum in San Sebastián. His works are also held in important public and private collections, including the Fondation Louis Vuitton and the Fondation Guerlain in Paris.
Through a practice that is both erudite and inventive, Antoine Roegiers has developed a distinctive visual language that bridges historical influence and contemporary concerns, addressing themes ranging from human folly to ecological anxiety with imagination and critical depth.

Son travail s’inscrit dans un dialogue constant avec l’histoire de l’art, en particulier avec les traditions flamandes et nord-européennes. Il puise son inspiration dans les œuvres de grands maîtres tels que Pieter Bruegel, Hieronymus Bosch et Peter Paul Rubens, ainsi que dans celles d’artistes belges du XIXe siècle comme James Ensor, Félicien Rops et Léon Spilliaert. Ces références nourrissent une pratique fondée sur la réinterprétation et la transmission, permettant de faire dialoguer les maîtres anciens avec un regard contemporain.
Roegiers développe une œuvre plurielle mêlant peinture à l’huile (sur bois et sur toile), dessin à la plume et à l’acrylique, ainsi que vidéo et animation. Après des débuts centrés sur le dessin et la peinture, il intègre progressivement l’image en mouvement, explorant les possibilités narratives et expressives de l’animation. Ses œuvres se distinguent par une grande précision du dessin, une richesse de détails et une forte dimension narrative, souvent marquée par un imaginaire mêlant humour, étrangeté et tension dramatique.
Depuis 2018, il mène un projet ambitieux de narration visuelle au long cours : une série de peintures interconnectées qui racontent une même histoire sur plusieurs années, prolongée par des films d’animation issus de ces œuvres. Ses créations, souvent fragmentaires, invitent le spectateur à recomposer lui-même le récit.
Au fil de sa carrière, Roegiers a reçu plusieurs distinctions, dont une résidence artistique
Yishu 8 à Pékin en 2012. Il est représenté par plusieurs galeries internationales et son travail a été exposé dans de nombreuses institutions majeures, telles que l’Albertina à Vienne, Bozar à Bruxelles, les Harvard Art Museums ou encore le musée San Telmo à Saint-Sébastien. Ses œuvres figurent également dans d’importantes collections publiques et privées, dont la Fondation Louis Vuitton et la Fondation Guerlain à Paris.
