THE SEVEN DEADLY SINS INSTALLATION
Inspired by Pieter Brueghel’s engravings of the seven deadly sins, this work is a moralizing but surprisingly poetic display of constant ingenuity where men, women, animals, transformed creatures, hybrid characters, giants and phantasmagorical constructions coexist in a delirious and perfect harmony.
In Les sept péchés capitaux; apart from the ingenious beauty of Brueghel’s drawings, Antoine Roegiers is fascinated by the representation of space. Scene after scene, he travels painstakingly through each of Brueghel’s seven drawings picking out detailed components of scenery and traits of personalities which are ingeniously recreated, reinvented and reproduced in a series of ink drawings.
The artist’s project is to bring the viewer inside the drawings and lead him to discover Brueghel’s world through the technique of animated cinema on seven screens, each of which presents a narrative animation of one of the Seven Deadly Sins.
INSTALLATION LES SEPT PÉCHÉS CAPITAUX
Inspirée des gravures de Pieter Brueghel l’ancien consacrées aux sept péchés capitaux, cette œuvre se présente comme une démonstration à la fois morale et étonnamment poétique, animée d’une inventivité constante, où coexistent, dans une harmonie à la fois délirante et maîtrisée, hommes, femmes, animaux, créatures métamorphosées, figures hybrides, géants et architectures fantasmagoriques.
Dans Les sept péchés capitaux, au-delà de la beauté ingénieuse des dessins de Brueghel, Antoine Roegiers s’attache à la représentation de l’espace. Scène après scène, il parcourt minutieusement chacune des sept compositions, en extrait des éléments de décor et des traits de caractère qu’il recrée, réinvente et transpose dans une série de dessins à l’encre.
Le projet de l’artiste consiste à faire pénétrer le spectateur au cœur même des images et à lui faire découvrir l’univers de Brueghel à travers le langage du cinéma d’animation, déployé sur sept écrans, chacun proposant une narration animée dédiée à l’un des sept péchés capitaux.
