LA GRANDE PARADE

Depuis 2018, Antoine Roegiers pense et réalise son projet de « Narration picturale » : une série de tableaux dont l’ensemble raconte une seule et même histoire. Un fil narratif libre, à chronologie variable et sans fin déterminée.
L’humour, la gravité et la poésie se côtoient pour mener une réflexion sur le monde contemporain tout en nous offrant la possibilité de rire de nous-même. Dans sa première exposition avec la galerie Templon à Bruxelles en 2023, nous avions laissé cette narration à un moment critique et brûlant . La nature reprenait ses droits après un énorme incendie. Ce nouveau chapitre : « La grande parade » est composé de treize huiles sur toile qui s’inscrivent dans la tradition du mouvement Romantique. On y retrouve les grands feux, les chiens errants, les masques, les corneilles et la forêt mais ici de nouveaux éléments viennent enrichir son histoire. Un grand duc irréductible, une mystérieuse éclipse et un retour des hommes en fanfare. Une humanité grotesque qui marche au pas, machinalement, des musiciens masqués dans la veine de James Ensor, qui se voilent la face quant à l’état du monde qui l’entoure. Ici s’exprime toute la Malice de l’artiste qui nous présente, avec une grande dérision, le décalage du défilé haut en couleur évoluant bruyamment dans un monde détruit sous le regard médusé des chiens hagards. « Je souhaitais faire revenir les hommes dans mon récit pour exprimer mon propre désarroi face à la folie de notre société et le sentiment d’impuissance qui nous sidère parfois » explique Antoine Roegiers, « Le tableau « la solitude du déserteur » (autoportrait) dévoile un individu désemparé ne sachant que faire de son audace de s’être échappé du groupe. L’éclipse quant à elle vient nous rappeler que nous ne sommes qu’un petit confettis dans ce si grand univers .»Photographies : Laurent Edeline
Since 2018, Antoine Roegiers has been conceiving and developing his “Pictorial Narrative” project: a series of paintings that, taken together, tell one and the same story. A free-flowing narrative thread, with a shifting chronology and no predetermined ending.
Humour, gravity and poetry coexist, inviting us to reflect on the contemporary world while also giving us the opportunity to laugh at ourselves. In his first exhibition with Galerie Templon in Brussels in 2023, we left this narrative at a critical and fiery moment. Nature was reclaiming its territory in the aftermath of a vast fire. This new chapter, The Great Parade, consists of thirteen oil paintings on canvas rooted in the tradition of Romanticism. The great fires, stray dogs, masks, crows and forest reappear, while new elements enrich the story: a defiant eagle owl, a mysterious eclipse, and the boisterous return of humankind. A grotesque humanity marches in step, mechanically; masked musicians in the spirit of James Ensor turn a blind eye to the state of the world around them. Here, the artist’s mischievousness comes fully into play. With biting irony, he reveals the striking incongruity of a colourful parade moving noisily through a devastated world, under the bewildered gaze of dazed and wandering dogs. “I wanted to bring humans back into my narrative as a way of expressing my own dismay at the madness of our society and the sense of powerlessness that can sometimes leave us stunned,” explains Antoine Roegiers. “The painting The Deserter’s Solitude (self-portrait) reveals a distraught individual who does not know what to do with the boldness that led him to break away from the group. The eclipse, meanwhile, reminds us that we are nothing more than a tiny speck of confetti in this vast universe.”Photographs by Laurent Edeline
